Miter and Bevel Calculator
This Calculator is currently under contruction.
This calculator is intended to calculate the miter and bevel of a table saw
for cutting crown molding. I recently had a need to cut crown molding for a home
project and discovered that it was very difficult to set my table saw to the
correct miter and bevel to make my cuts. I didn't want to buy a miter
saw for this small project and I thought there should be a way to do it without one.
I decided it would be a fun challenge to devise a formula for
calculating the correct angles. So I sat down with
pencil and paper and figured it out. It was harder than I
thought it would be but it turned out to be an interesting project. You will
find the resultant formula below. Of course, it would be somewhat simpler to cut
your molding with a miter saw, but if you don't have one try my formula.
In the boxes below, enter the wall angle,
height, and depth of crown molding and click Enter. You may have to add or
subtract 180deg from the wall angle to get the right answer due to the fact that
I have not given a standard way of measuring the inside or outside of wall
angles, but I'm working on that too, so please be patient.
